First-year Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn and Todd Bowles became close friends in Dallas when the two worked alongside each other with the Cowboys in 2005 and 2006. Lynn was the running backs coach, and Bowles was the secondary coach.

This season, Lynn’s Chargers started off 0-4. Bowles gave Lynn a call to lend some sympathy.

“After we walked off the field at the Philadelphia game, we finished 0-4 for my first quarter of the season. I got a call from him right away,” Lynn said of Bowles on a conference call Wednesday. “He was just encouraging me: ‘Stay the course, stay committed, you’re doing the right things.’ I really appreciated that.”

Los Angeles went on to win seven of its next nine games.

“I know how it was when I first broke in,” Bowles said. “It’s always good to have someone that's been there to reach out every now and then. It was done to me by a few people, so I was returning the favor and passing it on.”

Lynn served as a Jets assistant under Rex Ryan from 2009 to 2014, and Bowles revealed Wednesday he tried to retain Lynn on his staff when he took over for Ryan in 2015.

“He had other opportunities and bigger opportunities,” Bowles said. “He did well. I’m proud of him.”
