20 yrs. in tusk slay of granny
A FIRE tore through an eight-story gym in South Korea Thursday, leaving at least 29 dead and dozens more injured, according to authorities.
The inferno appears to have started from a vehicle in the basement parking lot of the facility located in the southern city of Jecheon, according to local outlets. What exactly sparked the fire however, is unclear. A Jecheon fire department official — who wished to rename anonymous — said most of the victims were trapped in public baths on the second and third floors. He also added the death toll is likely to rise and responders continue to put out the deadly blaze.
Authorities said dark smoke is also impeding search and rescue efforts.
Authorities rescued about 20 people who made it to the building’s rooftop, the BBC reported. Rescuers took a group of survivors to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, according to authorities. THE HARLEM man convicted of fatally beating his grandmother with a faux elephant tusk was sentenced to hard prison time Thursday.
Dominick Anderson, who is mentally ill, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted assault in September for killing his 62-year-old grandmother Beverly Holmes inside their home on Dec. 19, 2012.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley sentenced him to 20 years in prison on Thursday.
Anderson unleashed the brutal rampage in his family’s apartment because he believed his family members had cast him under a voodoo spell.
“I did hit my grandmother with a cream-colored elephant tusk, and I did it because she was trying to have me killed,” Anderson told cops, according to court documents.
“She started doing some voodoo s---,” he said. “And that’s what triggered me off.”
