Big heroin-ring bust
TWO drug-traffickers from the Bronx sat atop a conspiracy that pumped heroin and cocaine into communities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, prosecutors said Thursday.
Twenty one members of the drug ring were indicted, including Mario Martinez, 46, and Joan Velez, 36, who were charged as “major traffickers,” authorities said.
The arrests come after a 12-month wiretap investigation by police, federal Homeland Security investigators and the Bronx District Attorney’ s office.
Cops seized more than 10 kilos of heroin (photo), $20,000 in cash, three guns, crack and powder cocaine, prosecutors said.
Several of the alleged dealers peddled drugs along West Burnside Ave. in Morris Heights, authorities said.
Martinez and Velez could face life in prison if convicted under the state's major trafficker law, Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said.
