2018 Subaru WRX and WRXSTi

-

For 2018, the WRX and WRXSTi get some smart touch-ups, but not a full-on redesign. Instead, the WRX gets an updated front and rear suspension setup for better stability and ride comfort, as well as a re-vamped shifter for the 6-speed manual with a new synchro design that makes for smoother shifts and an easier clutch take-up. The electric power steering system was also updated, with a more natural feel and less weight by integrating the steering motor and electronic control unit, according to Subaru.

WRX buyers also have the option to choose a Performance Package for an additional cost over MSRP, which adds new Recaro 8-way power seats, red painted brake calipers and upgraded brake pads, and a moonroof delete option which reduces weight.

The 268 horsepower 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder is still standard, as is all-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual, while a CVT with sport shifting mode is available for the three-pedal averse.

As for the top-dog STi, this rally fighter for the road gets a comprehensive handling overhaul, with the same suspension tuning and AWD system revamp featured on the WRX, upgraded brakes, and first-ever 19-inch wheels as standard. The all-wheel-drive system, using a Driver Controlled Center Differential system, has been converted to all-electronic for faster response to changing terrain conditions.

All of this should help the WRX family stay near the top of the fastest compact cars, but there are also usability and comfort upgrades too, including improved sound deadening in the glass and door sealing, upgraded interior trim pieces and materials, and a 7.0-inch Starlink infotainment system.

There are also some safety updates for the two models, including a revised front structure for improved crash protection, and changes to the optional EyeSight active collision avoidance system available on the WRX Limited trim and above. Hill start assist and Hill Holder functions have also been replaced by a new Vehicle Hold system that will not only help you get going on a hill, but hold the car in place at a stoplight without having to keep your foot on the brake.

It’s no brand-new WRX, but these subtle updates should keep fans of what is already an excellent budget performance car happy as we all await the next generation of ‘Rex.
