City joins suit over gun regs for veterans
NEW YORK CITY is teaming up with other big cities to target the Department of Defense’s flawed system of flagging discharged vets who shouldn’t have guns.
Philadelphia and San Francisco are joining the city in a federal lawsuit that says the department consistently fails to give disqualifying records to the FBI.
The FBI runs the country’s national background check system related to gun sales — and Tuesday’s suit seeks to force fixes so ensure the agency gets critically important information.
Almost two months ago, Devin Kelley, a Texas man discharged from the Air Force, killed 25 people and an unborn child during a rampage inside a Sutherland Springs, Texas, church. The Air Force later admitted it didn’t follow the procedures to tell the FBI that Kelley was convicted of domestic assault while in the service and should have been barred from buying guns.
The suit seeks an order forcing the defense department to follow existing law. A DoD spokesman declined to comment.
