9 GIANT Qs FOR GETTLEMAN

- — John Healy

SIT OR START DAVIS WEBB

The timing of Gettleman's hiring is interesting because the Giants still have a game left to play.

While it is highly unlikely that he will force the Giants to change their game plan for Sunday, which consists of Eli Manning starting, Gettleman could demand to see Davis Webb get significant playing time.

The Giants hired Dave Gettleman as their new GM on Thursday, so what's on the agenda for him? Gettleman, 66, is a 30-year veteran in the NFL and most recently the GM of the Carolina Panthers. He will be inheriting a team full of high-paid, underachieving veterans while also in position to take advantage of a high draft pick. So what's on his to do list?

WHAT TO DO WITH ELI MANNING?

Eli Manning turns 37 next week and is under contract for two more seasons. With Webb on the roster and the potential to draft the next franchise quarterback, Manning could suddenly be on his way out the door.

Should the Giants decide to go that route, the next question becomes do they trade Manning or cut him? Manning has a no-trade clause, but cutting him would mean eating

$12.4 million, though it still saves them $9.8 million in cap space.

HOW TO APPROACH THE DRAFT

With the Giants currently holding the No. 2 pick, now would be the perfect time to draft a quarterback.

USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA’s Josh Rosen are regarded as the top two picks, should they declare for the draft, but if Gettleman has confidence in Webb or sticks with Manning, the Giants could address a different need, such as offensive line or select a play-making talent in running back Saquon Barkley.

HIRE A HEAD COACH

This will be the first order of business for Gettleman and possibly his most important.

With an array of candidates to choose from, Gettleman will need to find someone on the same page as him for upcoming personnel decisions and someone who can institute a much-needed culture change.

TRADE/SIGN/CUT ODELL

Once the head coach and quarterback situations are all sorted out, Odell Beckham is sure to be next on the agenda.

As Panthers GM, Gettleman saw Beckham and Josh Norman go after each other two seasons ago and Norman was gone at the end of the season despite being a crucial part of a team that reached the Super Bowl.

Beckham has expressed a desire to be the highest-paid player in the league, but Gettleman does not appear to be the type to put up with Beckham's antics.

WHAT TO DO WITH ELI APPLE

Eli Apple was suspended for the final game of the season and because of that, the Giants could cut him without owing him any of his guaranteed money.

Apple has been at the center of plenty of drama and locker room issues this season, and Gettleman may just want to rid himself of a first-round bust from Jerry Reese.

ROOT OUT THE LOCKER ROOM PROBLEMS

The Giants’ locker room appears to have been fractured this season, and that goes beyond Apple.

One of the other players whose lack of effort was questioned was corner Janoris Jenkins. The veteran has three years left on his contract but has been paid all his guaranteed money and would save $7 million in cap space if he was cut.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Reese neglected the offensive line and now it is up to Gettleman to come in and fix it. This could mean the end of Ereck Flowers as the Giants left tackle, but they could move him over to the right side .

SUPPORT STAFF

Gettleman has ties and worked with many of those in the Giants front office from his previous tenure in New York. Kevin Abrams is likely to remain as the assistant GM, which could mean little change for VP of Player Evaluation Marc Ross and the scouting department.
