N.J.: Plunge is un-bear-able; N.Y.: We’re oK

- BY ANDREW KESHNER

NOT ALL polar bears are created equal.

Days ahead of planned traditional New Year’s Day mass swims in the Atlantic Ocean, some New Jersey spots are nixing or postponing their plunges.

But not in Coney Island (photo from last year) where the high Monday is predicted to be 19 degrees.

“We are absolutely still on,” Dennis Thomas, president of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club told the Daily News on Friday. The Coney Island club, founded in 1903, typically draws hundreds of swimmers on New Year’s Day and raises money for local charities with the event.

Organizers in Ocean City and Ventnor City, N.J., have gotten cold feet and canceled due to the crazy temps, while a Brigantine event has been pushed back to Jan. 13, NJ.com reports.

Thomas said he wasn’t going to second guess those decisions. But for any disappointed would-be polar bears in New Jersey, he said “please come to Coney Island and join us.”

Thomas noted there’s still plenty of time to register — and it can even be done on site on New Year’s Day.

So far, about 600 hardy thrillseekers have signed up for the Brooklyn event.

In the more than 30 years Thomas has been with the club, he noted it has never called off a swim because of weather. Thomas had some pro tips. Some kind of footwear, like old shoes, would go a long way.

Swimmers should also arrange to have someone standing on the beach waiting with a towel.

And Thomas said swimmers are “welcome to scream as loud as they want.”
