COPS ARE trying to identify the doomed straphanger who was crushed by a train after he fell in between two subway cars in the West Village, police sources said Saturday.

The victim was run over by a southbound C train he was riding when he decided to walk in between cars about 8:30 p.m. Friday, cops said.

The gruesome scene unfolded as the train left the 14th St. station near Eighth Ave. and had entered the tunnel, officials said.

The train jolted to a halt, leaving passengers stranded for more than two hours as medics rushed to save the man, who died at the scene.

“The train made a mechanical noise when the brakes went on. I thought we hit something metallic or we were derailed,” passenger J.W. Miller, 56, told the Daily News.

Cops found no identification on the victim and are hoping to identify him through fingerprints and dental records, sources said.
