WINTERS’ SEASON OVER

Gang puts Forte on injured reserve

-

ON THURSDAY, Jets running back Matt Forte said he’s “basically been playing on one leg” for the past five weeks. Now he won’t be playing at all.

The Jets placed Forte on injured reserve Saturday, one day before the team wraps up its season against the Patriots in Foxborough. Forte has been dealing with swelling in his surgically repaired right knee for most of this season. He missed a Week 10 loss at the Bucs because of the swelling but played in all five games after the Jets’ bye in Week 11, battling through the pain and discomfort.

Forte has now likely played his final game for the Jets, who can save $3 million in cap space if they cut the 32-year-old running back after the season. Forte said this week he wants to play an 11th season in 2018. He was officially listed as questionable for this weekend’s game before Saturday’s announcement.

The Jets also placed rookie running back Akeem Judd (ankle) on injured reserve. They activated running back Jahad Thomas and wide receiver/returner Lucky Whitehead from the practice squad to fill out the 53-man roster.

Starting right guard Brian Winters announced on Twitter Saturday that he will be having surgery to repair abdomen and abductor muscles, which he “completely tore” in the second game of the season. The Jets placed Winters on injured reserve this week. He missed last weekend’s home loss to the Chargers.

“I tried as best I could to get out there and kill it every game but my body just isn’t allowing me to push it any further,” Winters wrote.
