THE BROOKLYN dad of a Green Beret killed Monday in Afghanistan had no words to express his sorrow over losing his only son.

“I can’t describe (it). It’s impossible. I’m still proud of him,” heartbroken dad David Golin, 55, told the Daily News in a darkened hallway of his Sheepshead Bay apartment building Wednesday.

It was on New Year’s Day that the Uber driver learned his son, Sgt. First Class Mihail Golin, died in a firefight while on patrol in Nangarhar, a largely ISIScontroled province in eastern Afghanistan.

“He was only 34 years (old). He was a very brave guy. A career in the military was his destiny,” Golin said. “They don’t have any details. They just told me he had been shot in the chest in Afghanistan.”

He said the dedicated soldier long dreamed of joining the armed forces.

He signed up a year after arriving in the U.S. from Latvia when he turned 21, the dad said.

“He said, ‘I want to serve (in) the Army.’ He signed up right after he came to America. He wanted to be in the airborne forces,” Golin said somberly.

“I will always remember him as a good man, proudly, and what he did for this country. He said, ‘This country has taken us (in).’ He wanted to serve for this country.”

Golin said his son joined the Army Special Forces three years ago.

“I was very proud of him. I guess it was a poor decision. I was wrong,” he said, expressing his dismay over the ongoing loss of American lives since a U.S.-led coalition invaded the country after 9/11.

“I don’t understand. This Afghanistan, some small country, what are they doing over there?” he asked. “Why are we losing our kids over there?. . . What for? That’s the main question.”

While the U.S. military formally ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014, it still maintains a ground force there and carries out operations against the Taliban and ISIS-affiliated groups.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Pentagon said Sgt. Golin lived in Fort Lee, N.J., and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colo.

Golin’s mother, Elena, was on her way from Latvia to attend funeral services, the family said.

His ex-wife, Katerina, and 6-year-old daughter, Vlada, who live in Colorado, were due to attend the transfer of his remains at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware late Wednesday.

The elder Golin said he would treasure the memory of his last brief call with his son on Dec. 30.

“We spoke right before New Year’s. He wished me a happy new year. He said he was going to be a couple of days at work and he cannot call me,” he said.

“And he said, ‘I love you.’ ”
