Tried to tell Prez no way to ax Comey

- Chris Sommerfeldt

A WHITE HOUSE lawyer afraid of what Donald Trump might do falsely led him to believe that Presidents can’t fire FBI directors, according to a report.

The explosive claim, conveyed to The New York Times by multiple people with knowledge of the matter, seemingly confirms reports that some aides withhold information from Trump because they fear what he might do.

The lawyer, Uttam Dhillon, who’s a deputy to chief White House counsel Don McGahn, made the false assessment after Trump openly began talking about wanting to fire former FBI Director James Comey last spring. Trump became frustrated with Comey after he publicly revealed the Justice Department was looking into links between his campaign and the Russian government.

Dhillon, sources told The Times, was convinced that the presidency would suffer tremendously if Comey got fired, so he told Trump that it was beyond presidential power to boot him.

But Dhillon’s advice was false and Trump ended up firing Comey on May 9 — a decision that set into motion a series of events that led to the appointment of special prosecutor Robert Mueller. The White House did not respond to requests for comment.
