Mets-Bucs talk McCutchen

- BY ARI GILBERG

Andrew McCutchen isn’t Giancarlo Stanton, but he would certainly qualify as a major splash for the Mets.

The Mets and Pirates are discussing a potential trade that would send the 2013 NL MVP to Flushing, according to Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal cautions, however, that no deal is close and the Mets are weighing “a variety of moves.”

The two teams discussed a potential McCutchen trade last year as well, but talks were “very, very preliminary and didn’t have much traction,” a source told the Daily News at the time.

The 31-year-old center fielder hit .279 with 28 home runs and 88 RBI last season. He’s made five All-Star appearances and earned four Silver Slugger Awards.

McCutchen is scheduled to earn $14.75 million this season in the final year of his deal. GM Sandy Alderson said he hopes to cut the team’s payroll.

If the trade talks between the Mets and Pirates do advance further, it’s unclear whom the Mets would include in such a deal, as the organization has one of the weakest farm systems in baseball. Also, none of the Mets’ topfive prospects — LHP David Peterson, RHP Justin Dunn, shortstop Andres Gimenez, LHP Thomas Szapucki and outfielder Desmond Lindsay — are close to being called up to the majors, as only Dunn has advanced to even High-A ball with the St. Lucie Mets.

The Mets have shopped Matt Harvey, but it’s unclear if Pittsburgh is interested in the 28-year-old.
