Harassed by students, he gets $110G
A FORMER Spanish teacher at a New Jersey high school will get $110,000 to settle a lawsuit in which he claimed he was harassed by students because he’s gay.
Kevin McManus began working at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School in 2008. He alleged in the suit that he “was the subject of a hostile work environment” after a student revealed he was gay during a class in 2011, NJ.com reported.
In the lawsuit, McManus claimed he was mocked by students with taunts like “don’t drop the soap” and “do you like nuts?”
McManus said the principal, the school’s affirmative-action officer and the disciplinary coordinator did nothing to stop the harassment, and alleged school officials retaliated against him after he filed a civil rights complaint by demanding his resignation and preventing him from using personal days and paid leaves of absence, according to NJ.com.
The school’s board signed off on the settlement last month, stipulating that the agreement was not an admission of guilt.
