Penn train pain minor this time

- Dan Rivoli

AMTRAK IS tweaking service Monday to make room for repair crews at Penn Station, transit officials said.

To enable rebuilding of two tracks at Penn Station, the Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit and Amtrak are modifying weekday service from Monday through May 28.

These diversions will let Amtrak crews demolish and replace concrete on Tracks 15 and 18 while installing new rail, according to officials.

The changes announced Sunday are minor compared with the just-passed “Summer of Hell,” when track replacement caused service disruption.

The LIRR is rerouting five of its 98 rush-hour trains into Penn Station and three of its 86 trains that head out of the transit hub.

To make up for the service shift, the LIRR added five trains — two early in the morning and three in the evening. Five LIRR trains will also have more seats than usual, with extra cars added. NJ Transit is changing service for five trains.

A New Jersey Coast Line train in both the morning and evening rush hours will run to Hoboken.
