Driver, 75, killed as car hits pole
A STATEN ISLAND man was killed when he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree just a block away from his home, police said.
Charles Romano, 75, was driving on Seaview Ave. toward Mason Ave. in Dongan Hills around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when his silver Saturn SUV veered to the right and slammed into the tree trunk.
Police said Romano may have suffered some sort of medical episode which led to the crash.
Medics took Romano to Staten Island University Hospital — just steps away from the collision — but he could not be saved.
