MANZIEL OFFERED CFL DEAL
Johnny Manziel’s two-year hiatus from professional football may soon come to an end. The CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats have offered Manziel a contract, the team announced in a statement Sunday.
Manziel previously activated his 10-day window for the Tiger-Cats to offer him a contract or lose his negotiation rights. The deadline was Sunday. By offering Manziel a contract the team now retains his rights for an additional year, giving both sides time to negotiate and agree on a deal.
The Tiger-Cats reportedly offered Manziel a two-year deal. The contract is believed to be a “competitive offer” and not just the league $54,000 minimum, according to TSN.
The former first-round pick last played in the NFL on Dec. 27, 2015.
Manziel previously hinted at a potential update regarding his return to football with an Instagram post early Sunday morning. Manziel posted a photo of himself throwing a football with the caption, “Just wait on it #ComebackSZN.” He also responded to a comment with a Canadian flag emoji, hinting at his contract offer to play in the CFL.
Tiger-Cats head coach June Jones previously praised Manziel, saying the former Browns quarterback would be “the best player to ever play” in the CFL. Former distinguished CFL quarterbacks include Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Moon and Doug Flutie, among others.
