No. 1 Spartans stunned by surging Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Keita Bates-Diop scored a career-high 32 points, and Ohio State stunned No. 1 Michigan State, 80-64, on Sunday.

The overachiev­ing Buckeyes put together an electrifyi­ng 12-0 run to finish the first half and kept their foot on the gas to give first-year coach Chris Holtmann a signature victory.

Ohio State (13-4, 4-0 Big Ten) won its third straight game in taking down the best team it is likely to see this season. The mistake-prone Spartans (15-2, 3-1) lost for the first time in the last 15 games, dating back to a seven-point loss to then-No. 1 Duke on Nov. 14.

ARIZONA STATE 80, UTAH 77: Mickey Mitchell had never hit two go-ahead free throws to win a game in his life before Sunday night. With two freebies dropping through the twine, the Arizona State sophomore averted what would have been a disastrous start to the Pac-12 season for the fourth-ranked team in the nation. Shannon Evans scored 22 points, and No. 4 Arizona State held on for a choppy victory over host Utah to end a two-game losing streak.

WICHITA STATE 95, SOUTH FLORIDA 57: Shaquille Morris scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring effort, and host No. 9 Wichita State blew out South Florida.

MIAMI 80, FLORIDA STATE 74: Miami 5-foot-7 freshman Chris Lykes scored a season-high 18 points, and the No. 15 Hurricanes withstood a late rally by the No. 24 Seminoles in Coral Gables.

CINCINNATI 76, SMU 56: Jacob Evans III scored 18 points, and Gary Clark had a big second half as No. 19 Cincinnati pulled away to beat SMU and extend the longest active home-court winning streak in the country to 35.

ELON 89, HOFSTRA 76: Tyler Seibring scored 22 points and all the Elon starters reached double figures in a victory over host Hofstra, overcoming a career-high 39 points by Justin Wright-Foreman.

Wright-Foreman, who also joined the 1,000-point club, made five 3-pointers but took 16 attempts.

SAINT PETER’S 84, QUINNIPIAC 58: Nick Griffin hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 and Elijah Gonzales added 15 points and nine assists to power Saint Peter’s to victory in Jersey City.

NIAGRA 86, MARIST 70: Matt Scott scored 23 points and Dominic Robb came off the bench to score all of his eight points in the paint during a comeback run in the second half as visiting Niagara rallied to defeat Marist. Brian Parker topped Marist (3-12, 1-2) with 21 points but was 6 of 15 from the floor.

IONA 84, FAIRFIELD 65: Deyshonee Much scored a career-high 32 points to lead Iona to a victory over Fairfield in New Rochelle.
