Ferry firm docks suit against city

- Stephen Rex Brown

A SIGHTSEEING ferry company that made the explosive allegation that Mayor de Blasio was shutting it down for a favored competitor has withdrawn its lawsuit to stay afloat, leaving its business in uncharted waters.

A city official told the Daily News that Freedom Cruises' permits to dock at Pier 36 and the Atlantic Basin were terminated and that the company must vacate following the withdrawal of the suit late Tuesday.

“This was an unwarranted suit and we are pleased it has been withdrawn,” a Law Department spokesman said.

It appears more legal battles were on the way. Freedom Cruises attorney Michael Hiller said he pulled the suit after the company got an invoice for docking permits for the month of January.

“They’re asking us to continue making payments and then calling us up and saying, ‘You can't work there anymore,’” Hiller said.

The company charged in its suit that the city was killing its business in favor of Hornblower, a rival company that won the $30 million contract to operate the new NYC Ferry service.
