AN 8-YEAR-OLD Queens girl died of the flu on Monday morning, just a day after she was diagnosed with the illness, police sources said.

The death of Emily Baez marked the second pediatric flu death of the 2017-18 flu season, according to City Health Department officials.

The first case occurred earlier this year. City Health Department officials confirmed both cases but wouldn’t give any additional details.

Health Department spokesman Julien Martinez said the fatalities underscore the importance of flu shots.

“The tragic death of a child due to the flu is a reminder of the devastating effects this illness can have on people of all ages,” Martinez said.

“The influenza season is far from over, and it is not too late to get the flu shot,” Martinez added.

Emily died at Elmhurst Hospital Center at 6:38 a.m. on Monday, just a short time after EMS rushed her there from her family’s LeFrak City apartment near 96th St.

Police said that on Sunday, Emily was taken to a doctor, diagnosed with the flu and given medication.

On Monday, her father called 911 after she began to experience trouble breathing. The distraught dad was performing CPR on his daughter when police arrived, according to police sources.

Police then performed CPR until EMS responders arrived and took Emily to Elmhurst Hospital Center.

Within an hour of her arrival at the hospital, she was dead.

She was enrolled at Public School 139 in Rego Park. The school sent a letter home with students explaining the situation to families, and crisis counselors will be made available.
