QUERREY TO FINAL

-

The Padres got their man. The team and free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer have agreed to a deal, two sources told the San Diego Union Tribune Saturday night.

The average annual val- ue of the eight-year deal is $18 million, the largest monetary commitment in Padres history.

The Padres had said they would be creative. The contract is believed to be frontloaded, which might make the opt-out more attractive for Hosmer.

The 28-year-old hit .318 with a .385 onbase percentage in 2017, both career highs. He hit 25 home runs for the second season in a row.

The Padres coveted Hosmer for his ability to get on base and the leadership they believe he can provide their young team. —Kevin Ace/San Diego Union Tribune l The Minnesota Twins acquired righthanded pitcher Jake Odorizzi from the Tampa Bay Rays for minor league infielder Jermaine Palacios. The Rays also acquired first baseman C.J. Cron from the Angels and designated outfielder Corey Dickerson for assignment.

Sam Querrey had everything figured out Saturday except his math.

The No. 2 seed lost track of the score and didn’t realize he had closed out the match when he beat No. 4 Adrian Mannarino 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of the New York Open. He advanced to face top-seeded Kevin Anderson, the U.S. Open runner-up in Sunday’s final.

l A day after ensuring his return to the top of the tennis rankings, Roger Federer sealed a place in the final of the ABN AMRO World Tournament by beating Andreas Seppi 6-3, 7-6 (3) on Saturday.
