Bubba ends drought, wins at Riviera

-

Bubba Watson ended two years without winning with his third victory at Riviera in Los Angeles. Watson seized control of the Genesis Open on Sunday with two par putts and a bunker shot he holed for birdie on the par-3 14th hole. He closed with a 2-under 69 for a 12-under 272 total and a two-shot victory over Kevin Na and Tony Finau.

It was his first victory since Riviera two years ago — the longest drought of the decade for the two-time Masters champion. He wrapped up another fun-filled week in L.A., al- though winning for the 10th time in his career was far more enjoyable than getting rejected by Tracy McGrady in the NBA All-Star celebrity game.

Na hit a wedge close to perfection from the worst angle on the reachable par-4 10th hole for a birdie and two-putted for birdie on the 11th to briefly take the lead. He fell back with consecutive bogeys from the trees and shot 69. Finau (69) lurked all day. His last chance was an eagle putt on the 17th that stopped inches short.

Patrick Cantlay had a one-shot lead until he ran into tree trouble on the 12th and 13th holes. He could only par the rest of the way for a 71 to tie for fourth with Scott Stallings (68).

HALL SNAPS SKID

Desi Rodriguez scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead host Seton Hall to an 82-77 victory over DePaul (10-16, 3-11 Big East). The Pirates (18-9, 7-7) snapped a four-game losing streak. Rodriguez made 12 of 21 shots, including four 3-pointers. Seton Hall built a nine-point lead with nine minutes to go and kept it, though a difficult 3-pointer by Max Strus cut it to 79-77 with 28 seconds left. l Rich Williams scored 21 points with eight rebounds and four assists and host Manhattan (13-15, 8-8 MAAC) beat Niagara (18-11, 11-5) 82-72.

l Gary Trent Jr. hit three foul shots with 1:31 left to put No. 12 Duke (22-5, 10-4 ACC) ahead for good and the visiting Blue Devils, again playing without injured star Marvin Bagley III, beat No. 11 and host Clemson (20-6, 9-5) 66-57.

QUERRY BEATEN

Top-seeded Kevin Anderson won the first New York Open, beating American Sam Querrey, seeded second, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) at Nassau Coliseum for his fourth career ATP Tour title.

Anderson won four consecutive three-set matches in the tournament’s first year at Nassau Coliseum after moving from Memphis. Querrey remained at 10 ATP titles, snapping a threematch winning streak in finals.

UCONN WOMEN ROLL ON

Katie Lou Samuelson scored 27 points and UConn continued to roll through its American Athletic Conference schedule with a 106-45 rout of Temple in Hartford. Kia Nurse added 16 points for the Huskies (26-0, 13-0).
