Star power against firepower
GUN CONTROL activists are putting three corporate targets in their cross hairs on Thursday: Amazon, Apple and FedEx.
A Twitter campaign promoted by Hollywood actresses including Debra Messing, Alyssa Milano and Justine Bateman is urging a one-day boycott of all three companies over their links to the National Rifle Association.
“Since Parkland, 20 corporations have severed their ties to the NRA,” read the message tweeted by all three women.
“@amazon, @Apple, and @FedEx have not. This Thursday, join us in a nationwide, 24 hour #March1NRABoycott of all three. Don’t shop, don’t stream, don’t ship.”
Customers in a Manhattan FedEx outlet were scratching their heads Tuesday after learning the shipping company was sticking with its discount program for NRA members. “I would not have walked in had I known,” said Alan Gregory, 48, of Midtown. “That’s why it was probably really empty in there, just a few homeless people. I think everyone is boycotting the NRA. FedEx needs to wake up. “Everyone needs to listen to these (Parkland) kids. Just having more guns around makes them more accessible. It’s just dangerous,” he said. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor David Hogg was among those urging people from coast to coast to join in the boycott. “I say we keep pressuring @amazon until they fully end their relationship with the NRA,” he tweeted earlier this week. FedEx is sticking with the NRA despite issuing a statement highlighting its differences with the gun advocacy group. “FedEx opposes assault rifles being in the hands of civilians,” the company said. “FedEx views assault rifles and large capacity magazines as an inherent potential danger to schools, workplaces and communities where such weapons are misused.”
