School’s out and so are the guns

-

Bronx: Our Constitution was based on the concept “Of the people, by the people, for the people.” Well, today, the people demand guns to be outlawed — except for law enforcement and military members. No one in Washington is listening. These drastic times of multiple shootings call for drastic measures. Parents all across the country — keep your children home from school until the government passes a law to outlaw guns. We don’t need them for protection the way we did during the 1700s and 1800s when there were no police precincts in every neighborhood the way we have now.

The government won’t want our schools to remain empty for long. They will reopen just as soon as sincere laws are enacted to outlaw guns. Parents and children will, in essence, be on strike until schools are places to go for an education, not a funeral. Empty every school across the nation and see then how fast our do-nothing lawmakers finally do something. Parents unite! There is strength in numbers.

Marcia Trimmer

Commit him

Brooklyn: Our alleged President calls for opening up new mental health hospitals as a solution to our nation’s gun problems. Okay, if that’s what he wants, I then suggest that he be the first patient committed, followed by the leadership of the NRA and Congress. Our “stable genius” President and his sidekick Wayne LaPierre are two of the top clowns running the circus in Washington that passes as our federal government today. Hope and prayers that our next generation of voters will save our great nation from these lunatics. God bless all Americans.

Lou J. Martinez

Weapons of wha?

Glendale: These shooters are not the only madmen in this country. We the people would like to know, what kind of a President would say that teachers should be armed with guns? All you would have is more children killed in the middle of shootouts. This is not the O.K. Corral, Mr. President. You want to spend billions of dollars on a wall. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are: Anyone can get a gun right here in the United States. Listen up, Mr. President: Nobody except for the police and the military should have assault rifles or automatic pistols. Would even a hunter need a weapon like that? Get off the golf course and do something right for our country for a change.

Laurel Turnbull

Of course

Freeport, L.I.: Hey, don’t pick on The Donald — encourage him to play more golf! Less time to get our country in trouble.

Charlotte Martins

Get in his head

Barrington, N.J.: To find out why this boy killed all 17 children and adults at their school, he must tell us his story — and to get him to tell us his story you have to bring in clergy, a priest, minister or rabbi, because they are trained to deal with emotional problems. Only when he tells us his story will the soul of this confused boy talk.

Robert Pozzi

Not needed

Bronx: On CNN, I saw a congressman and others with ashes for Ash Wednesday. If they want to please God, instead of giving up meat or other things for Lent, do something about banning these guns! There’s no reason to have these guns, no good use.

John J. McCarthy

What’s in a name

Bronx: Donald Trump: Deceitful, demented, destructive, domineering, dumb, divisive, denier, draftdodger, dangerous. Yet some still have the audacity to call him “President.” Robert Adams

Pointless guns

Medford, L.I.: Why are we selling assault rifles to any civilian? Please don’t quote the Second Amendment here. It was written in a different time for entirely different reasons. Assault weapons should be for our military and law enforcement. No civilian needs an assault rifle. Why haven’t our leaders found the courage to change things?

Stephanie Williamson

Nothing changes

Saddle Brook, N.J.: As long as the NRA is running Congress, don’t expect any changes. No background checks for instability, no cutting off weapons such as AR-15s. What a sad country we are. M.J. Crandall

End of respect

South Ozone Park: As someone who was born in the late 1930s, I see a loss of respect for people by other persons. No respect for police officers. Lack of religious beliefs, no Sunday school, no church attendance, blue laws done away with. Believe this or not, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because their people were evil. In the latest atrocity 17 young people were shot to death by a so-called deranged person, but this person planned it to a degree, wearing a gas mask, carrying smoke bombs, pulling the fire alarm so he had a group of kids to shoot into. When will this stop? J.L. Bezett

Disrespect rewarded

Flushing: To Voicer Maria Wardell: We should disrespect the bum who lied since he got to the White House and fondles every woman he sees. P.S.: Lyndon Johnson should have been put in jail.

George Vihlstrand

Brace yourselves

Long Island City: To Voicer Gary Goldblatt: After reading your letter I was in utter amazement. First of all, Mr. Rump does not “stretch the truth a bit at times,” he is a downright liar! His general tone and content is racist, moronic and self-serving. Never mind what Nancy Pelosi does or who she looks at during the emperor’s phony address — that’s her business. You don’t see or hear Democrats calling countries “shitholes” or reminding wives of slain war heroes “He knew what he signed up for.” If any of you rock-solid Trumpers think you got a good deal with this jerk, wait till you see what he and his Republican pals have in store for you coming soon. Kiss any hope of comfortable retirement goodbye when they take away Social Security and Medicare, and just wait and see what these bottom-feeders do to your tax rates. By the way, I chose not to vote for either candidate because I couldn’t figure out which one was the lesser of two evils. Robert Barbaris

Lucky man!

Oakland Gardens: I am one of the luckiest people on this Earth. Having my wife’s son Barry, an orthopedist, by my side of 18 years, having had a mild heart attack, a major stroke and many debilitating illnesses, makes me feel like I won the major prize on “Wheel of Fortune.” Families that stick together through thick and thin is hard to find these days.

Gary Rofofsky

Obey the law

Silver Spring, Md.: To all bleeding hearts: If you went to Mexico illegally — jail. Why do you want to reward them with U.S. citizenship? Why don’t you ask the parents of children murdered by illegals if they should stay? We need to stop rewarding people for breaking our laws. Think about the folks who did it right — their children are just as important.

Mena Marano

One rule for all

Brooklyn: The logic of Voicer Dena Fisher is skewed. She states, in defense of illegal immigrants, that Rosa Parks was illegal. Yes, and she submitted to punishment. If one believes that our overall system of government is just, then one needs to submit to the consequences of violation of a law. Martin Luther King believed this. He knew that when the day came that a civil rights bill was enacted, he expected that those who violated it ought not be exempted from consequences. What makes us a great country and unites us is respect for the law.

On fire

AFP Bronx: Cooking show hosts take note: I’m 84 years old and have concluded that Americans today are obsessed with three things — computers, bottled water and medication. Now I’ve added another obsession to that list — spicy food! There are a few wonderful TV chefs who haven’t yet lost their minds, like the Barefoot Contessa and Nancy Fuller of “Farmhouse Rules.” As for the rest of you — have you gone mad? Have you forgotten how to cook good food without adding a ton of spice and, as you like to call it, “heat”? Luckily for me, both my grandmothers and my mother were fabulous cooks, so I grew up with an abundance of delicious meals, like pot roast, potato pancakes and red cabbage; leg of lamb with roasted potatoes and creamed spinach; roast loin of pork with sauerkraut and spaetzle, and other endless goodies. I fortunately inherited their culinary talents and the love of cooking. Not a drop of jalapeño peppers, chili or hot sauce in any of these mouth-watering dishes.
