Broome Street Academy

-

Founded in 2011, Broome Street Academy (BSA) is a one-of-a-kind, tuitionfree charter high school for grades 9-12 that lives inside The Door.

High school is often a challenging period for students. New social pressures develop; academics take on greater weight as students prepare to apply for college; the combination of family, school and friends can be more difficult to navigate than ever before.

At Broome Street Academy, educators recognize that academic success is accelerated by effective emotional and social support systems. In addition to partnering with The Door, a positive youth development agency offering an in-school medical clinic, Broome Street Academy has five social workers on staff and uses the CHAMPION Model© to help address the wide variety of needs on campus. Every student is assigned a Champion, or an advocate in the building with whom they can develop an authentic, meaningful relationship. In addition, the academic program includes AP classes, preparations for Regents diplomas, and partnerships with arts organizations around the city.

Students attending BSA in Manhattan School District 2 deal with all these typical high school challenges—and cope with a great deal more. BSA’s 9th grade lottery gives preference to students who are homeless or transitionally housed, students who have been in or are currently in foster care, and students who have ever received preventative services.

BSA was built with their success in mind. We know that when young people make strong connections to supportive adults, they learn better and develop greater resilience. At BSA, each student’s Champion checks in with them regularly and keeps them motivated on their path to success after graduation.

We also fully integrate students with learning disabilities into our classrooms. There, they can benefit from peer-topeer learning and develop the kind of supportive friendships that will last a lifetime. Broome Street Academy was recently recognized as just one of eight schools nationwide to receive the 2017 Schools of Opportunity from the National Education Policy Center designation. The award is based on a school’s ability to provide vast learning opportunities, while creating a healthy school culture.

Finally, by sharing our building, we’re sharing our expertise and resources. Every service that The Door offers—college counseling, tutoring, health exams, counseling, arts, and more—is available to BSA’s students, just a flight of stairs away.

Together with The Door, BSA is reshaping the way New York City’s youth experiences—and succeeds in—their education.

Broome Street Academy provides a stable, predictable school environment for students who may cope with a great deal of chaos elsewhere in their lives.
