Charter Schools

-

Hebrew Public schools are exceptional, diverse K- 8 public charter schools that teach Modern Hebrew to children of all backgrounds and prepare them to be successful global citizens. Our network comprises five schools located in New York: In Brooklyn’s Mill Basin and Stillwell Avenue neighborhoods and in Harlem, along with six affiliate schools in New Jersey, Washington, DC, San Diego, Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

Hebrew Public is proud of its inclusive and diverse network of schools, as well as its commitment to racial and economic integration. Our schools are ‘diverse by design’. This means that we create a community for our students where diversity of language, culture and religion are both embraced and celebrated. This design model is supported by decades of research which show that bringing together children from different backgrounds helps them learn from one another, narrow the achievement gap, strengthen urban neighborhoods and build community among people who would otherwise remain apart. Our schools offer an academically rigorous curriculum aligned with NYS common core standards and a focus on global citizenship. Global citizenship education is supported through the daily study of Modern Hebrew, the comparative study of Israel and of students’ local community, the use of small group instruction, and through our focus on diversity and inclusion. Our diverse school communities are intentionally designed to develop students’ skills in empathy, cross-cultural understanding, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. We are strong believers in personalized learning, ensuring that each and every child has the opportunity to grow academically and socially in ways that are tailored to their needs and learning styles. Our personalized approach to learning is enhanced by our small student to teacher ratios, transforming the classroom experience into one of genuine community which in turn promotes positive emotional development in each child.

Hebrew Pubic middle schools provide students with the academic and personal foundation necessary to successfully pursue advanced studies and achieve continued personal growth as ethical and highly engaged global citizens.

We are currently applying for International Baccalaureate (IB) candidacy to provide a world-renowned rigorous academic program that prepares students to be globally competitive. If approved, our middle schools will offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP), which aims to develop middle school students into active learners and internationally minded young people, who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. IB MYP education offers a range of benefits including a competitive edge into top high schools.

Graduating 8th graders participate in a generously subsidized capstone trip to Israel that brings Israel to life and solidifies their years of studying Israel and learning Modern Hebrew.

Our schools are part of a growing movement of linguistically diverse public charter schools, teaching languages as varied as Modern Hebrew, Greek, Mandarin, French, and Arabic. This movement is based in part on a wide body of research showing some of the benefits of learning a foreign language: improved school performance, problemsolving skills, cross-cultural communication and understanding of different perspectives.

At Hebrew Public schools, Modern Hebrew is taught through the proficiencybased approach, which is considered the gold standard in foreign language instruction in the United States and around the world. Students receive one hour of Hebrew language instruction each day. They engage in meaningful interactions in the language, developing their speaking and comprehension skills at a rapid pace. As students advance through the grade levels, speaking and listening skills continue to be developed and reading and writing are introduced, developed and strengthened.

All Hebrew Public schools are tuition-free and open to students of all backgrounds. Learn more at www.hebrewpublic.org.
