Call it the Trump Tunnel

-

President Trump gyrates wildly on immigration, guns — you name it. Now add infrastructure to the list, as he tries to torpedo a desperately needed passenger rail tunnel under the Hudson. Wednesday marks six months to the day since Trump held a White House meeting on the sole topic of the tunnel, part of the Amtrak’s bloated nine-component $30 billion Gateway project. He was joined by his secretary of transportation, his chief of staff, budget director and director of the National Economic Council.

Also, by the governors of New York and New Jersey, three senators (Bob Menendez was on trial in Newark that day), seven House members from Jersey and five from New York.

So, while there were no TV cameras, there were lots of witnesses. And never once did Trump say that the plan was pure politics and should die.

But that is what he did last week, while pulling aside the House speaker in the Capitol Rotunda as they visited Billy Graham’s body lying in state. Trump’s aim: get back at that meddlesome Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer.

Come on. The tunnel is not about Schumer. It’s about 200,000 trips daily, almost all by Jerseyites, commuting to Manhattan. A new tube is needed. Amtrak’s existing, Sandy-damaged tunnels are U.S. property. The feds must chip in. Period.

But the full-blown, overpriced Gateway extravaganza must shrink. Don’t tear down a big chunk of Midtown at $6 billion. Don’t raise a pair of high, multibillion dollar bridges over the Hackensack River, when a single, lower span will do fine.

Do it simple. Do it right. Even change the name if you like. Trumpway is fine by us as long as it gets built. They can even paint it gold.
