Kyrie deal had real Hollywood ending

- BY JOHN HEALY

KYRIE Irving was so excited to be traded from the Cavaliers to the Celtics, he ran off the set of his upcoming movie “Uncle Drew.”

Actor Lil Rel Howery, one of the movie’s co-stars, spoke about working with the NBA All-Star while on the red carpet at Sunday’s Academy Awards and pulled back the curtain on the point guard’s reaction to the news he was being shipped to Boston.

“The dopest moment was when the trade actually went through,” Howery said. “He was so happy, man. We were in the middle of a scene. We were shooting a scene. His homeboy came in, whispered in his ear, and he just runs out the — we’re filming — he just runs out.”

Howery said when Irving returned to the set they had to film a dancing scene and the new Celtics guard was so excited the dancing was genuine.

“He comes back and everybody’s applauding,” Howery added. “It was a dancing scene, so when you see the movie of him really getting it, that’s him in real life. He was really happy.”

The 38-year-old actor said he would show up to the table read and see Irving and wonder what was really going on with the situation in Cleveland but was reluctant to ask.

“You’re watching 'SportsCenter' like you always do like, ‘man, he wants to leave Cleveland?’ You see him the next day but you don’t say nothing because you don’t know him like that,” he said. “But you’re looking awkwardly at him like, ‘man, I want to ask what’s going on.’”

Irving, who won a championship in Cleveland, is in second place in the Eastern Conference with the Celtics. He is averaging 24.8 points per game this season.

His movie, "Uncle Drew," is scheduled to be released in June.
