ALBANY — Looking to pop the question? New York State’s eBay site has something special for you.

The auction site, which the state government normally uses to sell off surplus goods, is offering a 14-karat, white-gold diamond engagement ring for sale.

As of Friday afternoon, the top bid was $238.

“For the romantic person proposing marriage, it would be a ring with a story and hopefully a happy ending,” said Heather Groll, a spokeswoman for the state’s Office of General Services, which runs the site.

The ring was found at Jones Beach on Long Island on Aug. 3, 2012 and held at the park office until the following year, when it was turned over to park police.

It remained in the police’s lost-and-found until January, when it was turned over for auction. State officials said the ring (inset) has seven round diamonds in a cluster setting. It has been appraised at $595. It was one of two rings being sold on New York’s eBay site Friday. A 14-karat white gold wedding band — which was also found by state parks officials — is for sale as well, with bids reaching $120 by Friday afternoon.

Other items for on the site Friday included a 75-ton rooftop airhandling unit, a metal band saw, porcelain bathroom sinks, metal bookcases and various tables and chairs.

Scrap metal is often the most popular item on the state’s eBay site.

Two piles of scrap metal were up for sale Friday, with each attracting bids of more than $500.
