Drunk driver pulled from burning car
A DRUNKEN driver was rescued from his burning SUV early Friday after he jumped a median and crashed into a parked tractor trailer, igniting a fire, Suffolk County police said.
After being saved, Jose Nunez, 25, was charged with driving while intoxicated.
Police said the 2 a.m. incident happened on Route 25A, by Hallock Ave., in Mount Sinai.
Nunez was heading west on on Route 25A when he lost control of his Honda CRV, then drove over the median and a wide swath of grass before ending up in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven, where he sideswiped a light pole and crashed into a tractor trailer, police said.
Nunez was knocked unconscious, and the engine, still revving at that point, caught fire.
Cops doused the flames with fire extinguishers. Other officers, fire department personnel and paramedics then rescued Nunez.
They kept his airway clear, used the jaws of life tool to cut the vehicle, then pulled him to safety.
Nunez regained consciousness during the rescue and was admitted to Stony Brook University, police said.
