Nun in lawsuit with Katy Perry dies in court

A NUN engaged in an emotional legal battle with pop star Katy Perry over the ownership of a California convent died Friday in court.

Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, 89, had served her church “with dedication and love for many years,” Archbishop Jose Gomez said in a statement.

Holzman (photo right) collapsed during a brief appearance in court for the ongoing dispute over Perry’s purchase of an 8-acre convent in Los Angeles.

Just hours before her death, Holzman spoke to KTTV and made an urgent appeal to Perry to leave the convent alone.

“To Katy Perry, please stop. It’s not doing anyone any good except hurting a lot of people,” said the elderly nun, one of several sisters who claimed the property belongs to them.

Perry (photo left) had hoped to buy the Roman-villa style buildings in the Los Feliz neighborhood for $14.5 million.

But the nuns — claiming the convent was theirs to sell — tried to strike a deal with a local entrepreneur to turn it into a boutique hotel. Perry had filed a lawsuit claiming that the other prospective buyer, restaurant owner Dana Hollister, was trying to interfere with her purchase of the property. The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary have owned the property for more than four decades, but they haven’t lived in the convent for several years. “Today we remember (Holzman) her life with gratitude. We extend our prayers today to the Immaculate Heart of Mary community and to all her friends and loved ones,” a statement from the archdiocese read.

A judge ruled in favor of Perry’s purchase in 2016. But in order for her to buy the estate from the archbishop, the deal needs approval from the Vatican.

Perry, who began her career as a Christian singer, is the daughter of pastor parents. She has since declared that she doesn’t identify as a Christian any longer.
