SMITH OUT

Callaway all but admitted that first baseman Dominic Smith is unlikely to make the major league squad. The 22-year-old was benched for the first game after showing up late for a team meeting and then strained his right quad in his only game this spring.

The Mets brought in veteran All-Star Adrian Gonzalez to give Smith some motivation/competition this spring.

“He hadn’t been competing, so no, really not a competition right now,” Callaway said with a laugh
