Mickey’s Mets club has ways to go: It’s

Pl ORT ST. LUCIE — Opening Day is still more than two weeks away, but Mickey Callaway didn’t mince words Sunday, and said the performanc­e of his roster “hasn’t been ideal.” Callaway held a team meeting Sunday to express some of his concerns. “We have some work to do on our fundamenta­ls,” Callaway told reporters later. “We’ve got to throw the ball where we want to throw it. We got to do things a little bit better than we’ve been doing it. We had a little talk about that (Sunday) morning. You have to throw the ball where it’s supposed to go. You have to run out balls. That’s gonna start happening. We have to play the game the right way if we’re gonna win. We have to do it better than everybody else. I think we’re still trying to get a feel for these guys and the baseball that they know. I think we need to do a better job at it, for sure.”

BRUCE ON FIRST?

During the Mets’ 2017 spring training, Jay Bruce took grounders at first base when then starter Lucas Duda was nursing a back injury. This year, the Mets have veteran Adrian Gonzalez to man the position while prospect Dominic Smith recovers from a right quad injury. And even when Smith returns — Callaway said Smith is “getting close” to returning to the field — he will likely start the season at Triple-A Las Vegas. Bruce said Sunday that he would be willing to step in and play first again if there were a need. “I haven’t done any concerted work (at first).
