All rise! Judge blasts his first home run of spring

- By PETER BOTTE

JUPITER, Fla. — Aaron Judge went deep in a game Sunday for the first time since undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, walloping a hefty blast to left-center that landed on the balcony of the Marlins’ offices beyond the outfield wall in the seventh inning. “He just missed it,” Aaron Boone joked. “I didn’t see where it landed, I just wanted to stick to my (opposite-field) approach and I was able to catch one,” Judge said. “I was just glad I felt good in the box and was swinging at the right pitches.”

ERR JORDAN ON SUNDAY

Jordan Montgomery officially was named on Friday as the fifth starter in the Yankees’ rotation, and he fully understands that he must pitch like he warrants that designation. Montgomery had posted a 1.04 ERA in his first three appearances this spring, but the secondyear lefty was charged

with four earned runs and allowed five hits in 2.1 innings in Sunday’s 7-5 loss to the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium.

“It’s nice to see them show some confidence in me. I just have to back it up now,” Montgomery said. “Today was a little rough. I’m just kind of in-between tempos right now, working fast, working slow, working fast. I’ll watch some tape from my first outings and get to work.”

First-year manager Boone had said before the game that he wants Montgomery to work deeper into games this season after going 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA over 155 innings (29 starts) in 2017.

“He just has to continue to work on that command, especially that secondary pitch that he can steal a strike,” Boone said. “That’s the way he’s got to pitch and that’s why he’s had success.”

MEDICAL NEWS

Boone said Tyler Wade, who left Saturday’s game after rolling over his left wrist on a diving defensive play, “checked out fine” and is expected to be in the lineup Monday night against Minnesota in Tampa.

“I guess we dodged a bullet in a way, especially considering our initial reaction to what it looked like,” Boone said. “He should be good to go.”

Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) hit off a tee on Sunday, and according to Boone, “if he continues to move forward, hopefully in the next couple of days we can start to map out a plan for him to get back into game action.”

And Clint Frazier (concussion)? “He just can’t quite get past those initial humps, so he’ll be talking to the neurologist again and we’ll just continue to follow his lead on it,” Boone said.

“Obviously, it’s not something you want to mess with or take lightly. The good news we keep getting is all the tests and everything check out pretty well. So we just have to be able to continue to slowly progress where we eventually can ramp up his activities.”
