- BY REUVEN BLAU

THE MAYOR of Mount Vernon in Westchester County was busted Monday for stealing tens of thousands of dollars in campaign cash, authorities said.

Richard Thomas, 35, is accused of using $12,900 from his inaugural campaign committee to pay off personal credit card debt, according to state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Thomas (photo) is also charged with diverting $45,000 from the 2015 Friends of Richard Thomas campaign fund and lying on his 2016 annual financial disclosure form, authorities.

“Mayor Thomas treated these accounts as slush funds to pay off cars, dinners and even a Chanel purse, and then lied about it in his filings,” Schneiderman said.

Thomas also allegedly used the campaign money to cover car loans, three car insurance policies, his rent and a meal at a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant in Mexico, that he tried to pass off as a “volunteer appreciation” event at the chain’s Times Square eatery.

He is charged with grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing.

The Democrat won the office in 2015, when he challenged longtime incumbent Mayor Ernie Davis, who was convicted of federal tax offenses while he was in office.

“The allegations are not true,” Thomas said after his arraignment.
