Jail staffer in gang lie
A CITY correction staffer lied about being a member of the Folk Nation gang when she applied for her job, authorities said Tuesday.
Breanne Riley was caught on several recorded phone calls with inmates talking about her gang affiliation, the Department of Investigation said.
“Why you calling me Crip? I’m Folk as of yesterday,” she allegedly said during one conversation.
Riley (photo) also “maintained close contact with at least seven additional inmates incarcerated on Rikers Island,” according to the Investigation Department.
She was stopped and interviewed by the New York-New Jersey U.S. Marshals Task Force last August for driving a person the NYPD believed to be a member of the Folk Nation, prosecutors said.
The alleged gang member was wanted for questioning in connection with a homicide, the Department of Investigation said.
But Riley, 24, from Brooklyn, denied she had any gang affiliation on a preemployment form she filled out before she was hired by the Correction Department in 2015, the criminal complaint says.
She did say she had prior contact with 10 inmates and listed their names.
Riley worked as a Correction Department legal coordinator, and earned approximately $46,804 a year.
She was suspended without pay after her arrest.
Riley was charged with two counts of offering a false instrument for filing, a felony.
If convicted of the most serious charge, she faces up to four years in prison.
She was not immediately available for comment.
