Adams’ chances take hit with weak outing

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

SARASOTA, Fla. — Many scouts wonder whether Chance Adams can eventually be a starter in the big leagues. After an abysmal outing on Wednesday, those questions remain.

Adams was shelled by the Orioles, surrendering a pair of two-run homers — first to Adam Jones in the first inning, then to Jonathan Schoop in the second. Both were on inside fastballs that caught too much of the plate.

Adams said his velocity was also down — usual for him as he builds up his arm strength — but he didn't want to use it as an excuse, as his command was poor.

“He always remains in the conversation because of the work he’s done. He’s earned that,” Aaron Boone said of Adams.

The 23-year-old righty was charged with five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. His spring ERA sits at 11.57. Adams is expected to open 2018 in the rotation at Triple-A Scranton.

OUT OF WORK

The Yankees released Adam Lind, the 34-year-old veteran first baseman and DH, who had signed a minor-league deal with the Bombers earlier this month. Lind batted .200 with an RBI and five strikeouts. The signing of versatile veteran Neil Walker put an end to the slim chances Lind had of making the team . . . . Boone left open the possibility that the Yankees could either carry two utility players or an extra pitcher going into the season. Hard-nosed Ronald Torreyes could potentially be the odd-man out if the Bombers elect to take keep someone like Domingo German, Luis Cessa or Wade LeBlanc. Walker crowds the situation, and the Yankees are high on the versatile Tyler Wade. Austin Romine is a lock off the bench, as is Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) if he's healthy by Opening Day. Clint Frazier (concussion) continues his rehab and is slated to see the neurologist on Thursday.
