GOPer pleads with Don on tunnel

- BY DENIS SLATTERY

REP. PETE KING hopes his gift of gab convinced President Trump to support funding a stalled rail tunnel linking New York and New Jersey.

The Long Island Republican conferred with Trump Thursday during the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon on Capitol Hill about funds for the $30 billion Gateway Project that would build two rail tunnels under the Hudson River.

King said the pair spoke for about five minutes before the St. Patrick’s Day-themed event kicked off.

“I just appreciate being able to explain why it’s so important for New York and New Jersey and the national economy as well,” King told the Daily News.

Trump has threatened to veto any spending bill that includes money for the long-delayed project.

King, who told Trump on Thursday that he will not vote for a bill without the funds, says the President was supportive of the needed infrastructure improvement only a few months ago.

“We had the commitment,” he said. “There was no disagreement at all. Basically, the White House broke their word.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan told lawmakers trying to keep the funds in the omnibus spending bill that they’d have to petition the President in person. So, as the luck of the Irish would have it, King did just that.

“It was cordial,” he said, adding that he couldn’t reveal any details of the talks.
