Elton: I love gov for 3rd term
ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo can feel the love from Elton John.
The “Rocket Man” singer and his husband, David Furnish, on Friday endorsed Cuomo’s bid for a third term as governor, citing, among other issues, his efforts to legalize same-sex marriage and end the AIDS epidemic. “Gov. Cuomo has championed a progressive agenda that has included significant policy and legislative progress on affordable housing, public education reform and women’s rights,” the pair said in a statement.
“And we will never forget his incredible leadership on marriage equality and everything he has done to champion gay rights,” they added.
Cuomo led the legislative charge in 2011 — his first year in office — to adopt New York’s marriage equality law.
The governor has also outlined plans to end AIDS in New York by 2020.
“For these important reasons we stand with and in support” of Cuomo, the pair said.
The endorsement comes as Cuomo is gearing up to face a possible primary challenge from actress Cynthia Nixon, who’s gay.
The Human Rights Campaign, a leading national LGBTQ advocacy organization, has already endorsed Cuomo’s reelection.
