‘Relentless’ Giant D? You

- BY JOHN HEALY

Kareem Martin may not have the same standing as other Giants acquisitions like Nate Solder or Alec Ogletree, but his addition to the team may be just as impactful.

The outside linebacker is the only member of the Giants defense who has played for new defensive coordinator James Bettcher, whose scheme includes a 3-4 base defense, which is different than the 4-3 defense the Giants have used in previous years.

“It’s going to be a relentless defense,” Martin said on a conference call Friday. “We’re a heavy blitz team in the past years and he likes to get guys to run up the field and I think that’s what the guys are going to be really excited about, especially the guys up front.”

Martin played for Bettcher the last three seasons in Arizona and gradually became a bigger part of the Cardinals defense last year, starting 10 games and finishing with 23 tackles, an interception, forced fumble and a sack.

He understands that part of his role is going to be helping his new teammates get acclimated to Bettcher’s defense.

“That’s something that I expected when they gave me the call and made the offer,” he said. “I knew that I would probably be looked upon as a guy who would be asked those types of questions about the defense after being in it for the last few years ... So I think I’ll be a big help in helping a lot of the guys understand the defense along with the coaches as well. I know they’re going to do a great job of teaching it and learning it themselves.”

Martin said he has not spoken to any players yet, but he is one of just two players on the current roster who played in a 3-4 base last season.
