Knifed kid had heart

- BY CHRISTINA CARREGA

A LITTLE GIRL who survived a vicious slashing in a Brooklyn public housing elevator was worried first and foremost about the best friend who was mortally wounded in the horrific attack, a trauma doctor testified Monday.

The heartbreaking account came in Brooklyn Supreme Court, where Daniel St. Hubert, 30, is standing trial for the June 1, 2014, murder of Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, and the attempted murder of Mikayla Capers, now 11.

“The first thing she asked about when the trach (tracheostomy tube) was removed, she asked about her friend,” Dr. Joshua Cappell (photo) of New York Presbyterian Hospital, who treated Mikayla in the pediatric truama unit, testified.

“We were more worried about the emotional trauma,” he said.

According to prosecutors, then-7-year-old Mikayla was on the elevator with 6-year-old P.J. heading to his sixth-floor apartment at 845 Schenck Ave. in East New York when they were savagely attacked for no reason.

The little girl suffered 16 stab wounds and a collapsed lung, and was hospitalized for nine days, though she needed medication and months of physical therapy afterward.

Her best friend died at Brookdale University Hospital from 11 stab wounds. Prosecutors say DNA from the scene matched St. Hubert, who was placed near the crime scene by witnesses, video surveillance and cell phone records.

St. Hubert’s defense lawyer argues there was no blood on the clothes St. Hubert wore that day, and disputes the DNA evidence. St. Hubert faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted.
