A 14-YEAR-OLD student wounded during a shooting at a Maryland high school was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

Desmond Barnes was shot in the thigh only a few minutes before classes at Great Mills High School were set to begin Tuesday. He was treated at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, The Baltimore Sun reported.

“Desmond is an amazing child. He is an exceptionally bright young male with an extremely bright future ahead of him,” reads a page dedicated to raising funds for his medical expenses.

“He is constantly winning awards and receiving recognition in various areas of study, making his parents, siblings and his entire family proud.” Jaelynn Willey (photo) was also wounded after authorities said Austin Rollins, 17, opened fire in the school. She remained in critical condition Wednesday.

The suspected gunman died at a hospital shortly after a confrontation with the school’s resource officer, Deputy 1st Class Blaine Gaskill.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron told the Sun that Gaskill was quick to approach the shooter, with each of them firing their weapons “almost simultaneously.”
