Thome to go in Hall in ‘C’ cap
JIM Thome is getting his wish.
The 2018 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee will see his request granted to have the Cleveland Indians’ block letter ‘C’ logo on his Cooperstown plaque and not Chief Wahoo, according to MLB.com.
The acclaimed first baseman made his feelings known early last month, stating his preference to not have the Chief Wahoo logo.
“I know my decision would be to wear the ‘C’ because I think it’s the right thing to do,” Thome said Friday. “I think I need to have a conversation with the Hall of Fame because of all the history and everything involved. I just think that's the right thing to do.”
After more than 70 years of using the redfaced cartoon character, the Indians announced in January the team would be ditching the controversial mascot from the team’s uniforms beginning in 2019.
“We have consistently maintained that we are cognizant and sensitive to both sides of the discussion,” Indians owner Paul Dolan said. “While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, I’m ultimately in agreement with Commissioner (Rob) Manfred’s desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019.”
It seems Thome, however, will succeed in being ahead of the curve. — Zachary Ripple
