Campus unrest brews

There is labor unrest between the school and graduate student teachers, and recently, comedian Hannibal Buress’ show on campus was cut short when he made a joke about sex abuse within the Catholic Church on the Jesuit school’s campus, upsetting students as those in attendance called for refunds.

“I just thought it was kind of ridiculous how Loyola encourages us to think in a critical manner, that critiques institutions, and then they’re an institution that can’t handle the critique,” said Loyola freshman William Hansberry.

And yet, somehow, Loyola head coach Porter Moser has been able to keep his team focused on basketball and the Nevada Wolf Pack.

“This is the first I’ve heard about it,” said freshman forward Christian Negron when I asked how the team was handling everything.

“We haven’t been able to address it (unrest on campus) yet. I know the university is very much on top of it, but it hasn’t been something that’s been addressed,” Moser said.

“Everything has been happening so fast for us. We got back from Dallas, and then we found who we were going to play, and there’s been prep, and the next thing you know, we left Tuesday morning. I know the university, and there are great people there, and they’re handling that.”

Sophomore guard Cameron Satterwhite was also clueless about what is taking place on campus when I asked him, but he did shed light on how the team is focusing more on the love and support they’ve received from the school and the city of Chicago this past week.

“In the beginning of the season, Loyola wasn’t like the ‘basketball school,’ and we’re not the type to tell people to come to the games,” he said. “But we’re happy that we’re seeing all the love and the school support.”

At some point, Loyola’s season is going to come to an end and the team will return back home to campus. hat that campus will look like remains to be seen, but no matter what takes place in the coming days and weeks, it cannot be ignored that the basketball team’s success has shined a light on the unrest at Loyola.

Which is why the Ramblers’ Cinderella season is a temporary distraction for the turmoil that’s brewing on campus.
