A garbage guy trashes 3 vehicles

- Esha Ray

A CITY garbage man trashed three cars in Queens Saturday when he took it upon himself to move a vehicle blocking his route, police said.

Sanitation worker James McGuiness was collecting rubbish along Hampton St. near Elmhurst Ave. in Elmhurst when he and his partner spotted an empty van parked in their path just after 11 a.m., cops said.

The keys were in the ignition so McGuiness, 50, decided to move the van himself, authorities said.

As he backed up, he plowed into a parked Acura, which slammed into a parked Honda, police said.

When the owner of all three cars came back, he took one look at the damage and called the cops.

McGuiness, who has been with the Department of Sanitation since 1993, was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle.

A DSNY spokesman said the agency plans to wait until the investigation is complete “before any possible personnel actions could be considered.”
