Phil Evans’ ability to play several positions and with some pop in his bat has him vying for a spot on the roster. While Callaway said Saturday that the Mets are still trying to figure out if they bring an extra pitcher or a bench player, it’s clear Evans has made an impression.

“I think what he did in the big leagues last year, the way he swung the bat, he was definitely on the radar. He’s taken the radar to a whole other extreme,” Callaway said. “He’s done a great job at every position. He can sit behind plate in a pinch and all the other positions he’s played really well. He’s impressed everybody.”
