2nd thoughts include taking PSU’s Saquon

- BY PAT LEONARD

ORLANDO — John Mara sounds like he’d be more than comfortable with his Giants drafting Penn State back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in April. “I certainly don’t think it’s too high to take a running back,” the Giants president and co-owner said Sunday afternoon at the RitzCarlton Grande Lakes. “And yeah, I think we could use some additional talent there (at that position).”

Mara made clear that while the Giants are doing a ton of homework on quarterback prospects, they won’t go in that direction unless they strongly believe in one to be the future of their franchise.

“I think it comes down to if you have a chance to get a quarterback and you got a conviction about that guy, then I think that’s where you have to go,” Mara said. “But I’m not sure we’re at that point yet.”

Truthfully, Mara said, the Giants don’t know what they’re going to do yet. But he definitely put everything on the table.

“We may have (a future QB) on the roster right now (in 2016 third-round pick Davis Webb), I just don’t know that yet,” Mara said. “But I don’t think that can be a factor. I think if we end up having a conviction about a quarterback, then that certainly would be something we’d have to strongly consider. If not, then take the next best player or deal it.

“If you’re asking me right now what I think we’re gonna do, we don’t know that just yet,” Mara added. “We’re still very early on in the evaluation process, and I could see any number of different scenarios happening.”
