Next & the City: SJP backs Nixon
ALBANY — Actress and city resident Sarah Jessica Parker on Thursday morning threw her support for governor to her “Sex and the City” castmate Cynthia Nixon.
Not long after, a host of labor union leaders ripped Nixon for comments she made Wednesday about how labor deals have been driving up the cost of needed subway improvements.
Parker posted her endorsement on her Instagram a day after her publicist issued a more mealy mouthed statement on her behalf saying, “I look forward to talking to her about her New York state gubernatorial bid.”
“A mother. An activist. An advocate. A fighter. A NY’er. A dear friend. Running for governor of our great state,” Parker wrote in the Thursday morning post to her 4 million followers.
Calling Nixon “my sister on and off screen,” Parker (photo left, with Nixon), who played Carrie Bradshaw, told her former castmate, “You have my love, support, and vote.”
In just over one hour, the post had over 100,000 likes.
Nixon had already been endorsed in her Democratic primary bid against Gov. Cuomo by another fellow “Sex and the City” castmate Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte.
Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones on the show, has said only that “I support & respect any former colleague’s right to make their own career choices.”
Labor leaders weren’t feeling the same love for Nixon as Parker.
The heads of the state AFL-CIO, the Transport Workers Union international, the downstate building trades, and the local Teamsters all ripped into the fledging Democratic candidate.
All the union leaders have strong ties to Cuomo.
Transport Workers Union International President John Samuelson called Nixon a “phony progressive” and a “wealthy celebrity completely disconnected from the very workers she claims to care about.”
