Preg migrants, directly to jail!
THE TRUMP administration has ended a program that exempted pregnant undocumented women from detention, federal officials announced Thursday.
The policy change paves the way to keep more pregnant women in custody while providing them with medical attention, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement directive finalized in December.
The new policy treats pregnant women like any other detainee, but women in their third trimester will be released, ICE said.
“This does not mean that all pregnant aliens will be detained; only those whose detention is necessary to effectuate removal, as well as those deemed a flight risk or danger to the community,” ICE said in a statement.
Immigration and human rights advocates slammed the policy.
“Americans should all be horrified at the thought of innocent pregnant women — many of whom fled violence and abuse in their home countries — languishing in what are essentially prisons,” said Eleanor Acer, senior director of the refugee protection program at Human Rights First.
