No special probe of FBI
ATTORNEY GENERAL Jeff Sessions announced Thursday that a federal prosecutor is looking into Republican allegations that the FBI is plagued by an anti-Trump bias — but stopped short of appointing a special counsel to investigate the matter.
Responding to a request from congressional Republicans, Sessions said that Utah U.S. Attorney John Huber is evaluating claims that the FBI overstepped its authority by surveilling Trump campaign aide Carter Page, whose link to Russia has made him of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller.
Sessions’ decision will likely aggravate President Trump and Republicans, who contend that anything but a special counsel is insufficient. Sessions noted that special counsels are only selected for the most “extraordinary circumstances.” He added that he might consider a special counsel if Huber finds “merit” for one.
