Ex-cop in bribe rap slams DA over evidence
PROSECUTORS are withholding key evidence in the corruption case against an ex-NYPD official that could potentially clear him, his defense lawyer charged in new court papers.
Retired NYPD Deputy Inspector James Grant is accused of pocketing bribes from two Mayor de Blasio donors, Jeremy Reichberg and Jona Rechnitz, in exchange for favors, such as speeding up gun license applications.
But Alex (Shaya) Lichtenstein, who already pleaded guilty to bribing cops for expediting pistol permits, told cops Grant wasn’t involved in the scheme, Grant lawyer John Meringolo noted.
Lichtenstein made the potentially exculpatory statement at his home while being questioned by investigators before being arrested on April 17, 2016. Unbeknownst to the officers — and first revealed last week by the Daily News — cameras in Lichtenstein’s home recorded the entire encounter.
“The videos have never been produced or even mentioned to defense counsel,” Meringolo charged in a court filing late Thursday.
Grant’s trial is slated to start April 30.
